To get started download Nikon Scan 4.03 for Windows Vista 32 bit. Install the software on your 64 bit Windows 7 or Windows 8. Next we need to create a driver for your scanner that is 64 bit compatible. To do so create a new folder anywhere on your system you feel comfortable with. Depending on the scanner model you own copy the two files "NKScnUSD.dll" and "Nks1394.inf" or respectively "NksUSB.inf" which are to be found under "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver\Scan1394" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver\ScanUSB" into that folder. Open "Nks1394.inf" or respectively "NksUSB.inf" in a text editor of your choice to replace its contents. To do so click into the text box below and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the code. Next enter your text editor and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+V to paste the code into the *.inf file.
We don't use our scanners on Windows 8 but user feedback tells us that in order to install the driver created above one needs to start Windows 8 in a special mode first. Getting Windows 8 to boot in that mode involves a series of steps of which we provide screen captures below. The screen captures come from a virtual Windows 8 machine and since FireWire devices can't be passed through to that virtual system we won't show the actual driver installation.

This will let you use Nikon Scan 4.03 on the 64 bit versions of Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista with the following Scanners: Nikon Super Coolscan LS-4000 ED, Nikon Super Coolscan LS-5000 ED, Nikon Super Coolscan LS-8000 ED, Nikon Super Coolscan LS-9000 ED, Nikon Coolscan IV (LS-40) and Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50).
Video tutorial on increasing the quality of your slide and negative scans from Nikon Scan with ColorPerfect! Find out more about how to scan with Nikon Scan. ColorPerfect processes scans with color integrity and gives unprecedented flexibility in creative image editing. To harness the full potential of our Photoshop Plug-in it's important to obtain image data that has been subjected to as little processing as possible (RAW data). The following video tutorial gives a step by step explanation on how to achieve this with Nikon Scan.
In this video I'd like to show you how to create linear scans using Nikon Scan. What that means is that we are going to configure Nikon Scan so that it won't perform any image editing at all and will save the data it gets from the scanner straight into a tiff file.
To get started with creating linear scans we first have to change a couple of preferences, so we chose Nikon Scan preferences. What we'd like to do is setting the Gamma from 1.8 on the Mac or 2.2 on Windows computers to 1. In order to be able to do so we first need to disable the Nikon color management system. Changing back to the Gamma tab we find that Gamma is now editable and that we can set this to 1. If you are not using a fresh installation of Nikon Scan we should also take a look at the Advanced Color tab. Please make sure that the white point targets are all set to 255, the grey point targets are set to 127 and the black point targets are set to zero. After having set this up OK out of the preferences and note that we will have to restart the Nikon Scan software. So lets exit Nikon Scan and restart it. All right.
Once the general preferences are set it is important that we chose positive for our scan because we don't want Nikon Scan to invert our image as we intend to do that using ColorPerfect's ColorNeg mode later on.
So next let's discuss the various settings on the tool palette. On the Crop tab we can set up the desired resolution. When scanning for archival purposes it is usually best to set this to the maximum optical resolution the scanner is capable of. For the modern Nikon scanners this will usually be 4000 dpi.
Next it's important to set the scanner bit depth to either 16 bits per channel for the latest generation of Nikon scanners or to 14 bits per channel for the previous generation of Nikon scanners. If you like you can also set up multi sampling. For this tutorial video I'll stay at normal mode.
When using a Nikon Coolscan LS 8000 be sure to enable the superfine scan feature because there was a problem with the stepping motors in that scanner, which produce banding effects in the darkest parts of a scan which in case of negative scans correlate to much brighter areas after the inversion so the effect will be much more visible and usually disturbing.
When scanning color negatives it is also generally permissible to use analog gains to eliminate the orange mask and to increase per channel detail. For scanners with an actual 16 bit analog digital converter this is usually not required. For the previous generation of scanners a quality increase was more noticeable. Still I'm going to show you how to set that up. For color negatives red is usually the brightest channel. The data recorded by the green channel is darker. So it should be fine if we used an exposure increase of one F stop here and it should even be fine to use about 2 F stops of an exposure increase for the blue channel. Please note that enabling the analog gains will increase lamp brightness as long as that's possible and after that will lengthen exposure time, which will effectively slow down your scan. For the modern scanners what I'd recommend is finding out what values do not lengthen your scan time noticeably and do stick with those.
I know that the frame I am going to scan is at index 3. However when switching to index 3 all my settings will be lost as we did configure the frame at index 1. Let's go back to index 1 and save our settings. We chose settings, save settings and give the settings a descriptive name. Linear negative 1x for the multi sampling, 1G2B for the analog gain settings. And let's confirm that by pressing OK.
Now we can switch to index 3 and restore the settings we just saved from our settings list. Since I know that I did insert the film into the holder there is no need for a preview scan and I'll create the final scan right away.
Since I did not configure the Auto Save feature in the options we will now have to save our scan. Let's say . . . and let's save it on the desktop. Of course you can also use Nikon Scan's batch scanning features when creating linear scans which will usually automatically save your scans to disk. After having created the scan we can now leave Nikon Scan.
Windows recognizes my LS 40 Ed scanner, but says that there is no driver. Nikon scan 3.1 or 4 does not recognize that a scanner is present, and won't install a new driver. How do I get a driver into the scanner?
If you use Nikon Scan 4.0.3, you can specify output as RAW. Nikon Scan will output a NEF file which Lightroom (at least my Lightroom 6.14) will recognize and process in the Develop module just as it would one taken with a Nikon DSLR or ILC. I assume you will want to catalog your scans in Lightroom Library and tag them with Keywords.
The Coolscan IV ED is an entry-level scanner designed for photo enthusiasts who are looking to digitize their images to send photos by e-mail, design Web pages or archive and catalog them to preserve and restore memories captured on film. The Super Coolscan 4000 ED is a high-performance desktop film scanner for producing large volume scans. It features an optical density of 0 to 4.2 and 4000 dpi for wide dynamic range and high resolution. The Super Coolscan 8000 ED is a multi-format film scanner capable of scanning a variety of film formats, including 35mm, 120/220, 16mm, slide glass and electron microscope, at true 4,000 dpi optical resolution with drum scanner quality.
Nikon scan was only made for Windows Vista and older, however it should be able to run on Windows 10. Check links below. The basic point is not to install the drivers that comes with Nikon Scan but to use newer drivers. Use on your own risk, may not work on all computers.
2. If Vuescan is allready installed and working with the scanner you can skip this step and go to step 3. Vuescan has already installed the driver. Installing a trial of Vuescan will also install the driver.
Just acquired Nikon 5000ED scan and would like your thoughts on software for this scanner for slides and negatives? Also, could someone forward me the manual for this scanner. Did not come with one. Thank you in advance for your time.
Some people favor for Vuescan, just try it out and see which one you like. Since you will be using Negative Lab Pro (NLP), then maybe its better to use Vuescan. For normal scanning (not raw) sometimes Vuescan does it better than NikonScan, it just depends on the film material/quality shots.
Thanks Steve for your comments. Do I purchase the professional version or just the standard version of Vuescan to kick-off my project? I think I will just be doing normal scanning vs raw to expeditie things along the way. In addition, I have to purchase NLP software as well from Nikon? Your suggestion regarding naming & archiving is essentiail and I will set-up a external drive for off-loading the images as well. Is their a demo of Vuescan available? All the best!
Well folks,I have "solved" a problem for Super Coolscan 5000 ED Nikon driver under Windows 7 x64.Actually, I just fooled the system by installing Nikon Scan and driver on Virtual PC :)It is not a nice solution, but it acceptable for me. Install Windows XP RC mode for Windows 7 x64 - you can download it from Microsoft site. Search for Virtual PC for Win7 and you will find it. Install it and start the VPC. Install windows updates on VPC.After that install Nicon Scan software on this VPC. Turn on the scanner and "attach" it to the VPC - the USB menu in VPC top frame shows a list of available USB devices.I solved it 3 days ago and successfully scanned several films already :)P.S. if your PC is strong enough - give 1GB of memory to VPC, it will work faster. The default is 512MB, which is not enough for comfortable scan.
I am frustrated, as I feel I plopped down a considerable amount of money 3 years ago, to now either have to pay even more money, or be stuck with a doorstop (or do the workarounds that people have suggested, that make the scanner work, but are not ideal). 2ff7e9595c
