The issue was that the document was protected. I tried to insert an image of what you will see if you go to theReview tab and click on Protect tab, but the site would not let me, but you can see for yourself. If there document is protected, it gives you an option to unprotect where you will need to enter the password.

You need to remove protection to be able to get access to full editing features. What you cannot do depends on what the person had in mind. This is also the same in Excel, by the way. Saving as another version and unprotecting as you do that can work, but you need to know the password to do so.

The most likely cause for this situation is that the language of the word you are trying to add doesn't match the language of the dictionary. There you have the options "Local file" and if you are on 6.40 SP 15 or higher "XML export". With "Local file" you can save the report i.e. to a excel file in the file system of your PC. It saves the data but not the visualization. Therefore it might be required to do some tune.
